A guide to building snowmen
Have you ever built a snowman? Well you must – it’s great fun! But make sure you wrap up warm and always eat all your breakfast first. You will need a full belly because making snowmen can be hard work.
When building snowmen there are several rules you must follow if your snowman is to come to life. Remember, snowmen will only walk around and talk when you are not looking, or to wave to Santa as he passes, except for when they go to the snowman’s ball of course. So how do we make a snowman? I hear you shout. Well it is easy if you always follow these four rules:
- Rule number one – Snowmen can be boys or girls or mummies and daddies
- Rule number two – Snowmen must have arms, eyes, a nose, and mouth. They need them so they can see where they are going, so they can dance and play their instruments, talk to each other and of course so they can sing the Snowman’s Song.
- Rule number three – Give them at least a hat and scarf so they feel fully dressed.
- Rule number four – Don’t ever use yellow snow. That is because it might just have been where a reindeer has had a wee. Yuck!
Now you know the rules making snowmen, why not have a go!
Snowmen like to be built first thing in the morning so they can have all day to watch you play. First you need a big round ball of snow for the body, then you need a smaller round ball for the head to sit on the body. Sticks or a sweeping brush will do for the arms, and two big stones, pieces of coal or something similar for the eyes. A carrot is perfect for the nose and a few smaller stones placed together will form the mouth. A nice pompom hat, top hat or Easter bonnet along with a woolly scarf will finish them nicely. You could also give them a winter coat to wear if you have one to spare, they would appreciate it. You would get it back after a few days, and the snowmen do like to look smart for the Snowmen’s Ball.
The Snowman’s Ball
If you make a snowman during the first week of the new year, and they seem to disappear for a while, they might just have gone to the Snowman’s Ball. So don’t worry, they are having a great time. Now if you didn’t know that snowmen went to a ball, listen carefully. Snuggle down nice and warm and get ready to go to sleep. Are you ready? Then I will begin by telling you about the latest Snowman’s Ball. This story was told to me by someone who should know, someone who was there. Someone who was the star attraction! Someone who goes every year, and someone who sings and dances and laughs with a “HO! HO! HO!” Someone who fly’s in with a team of reindeer. Have you guessed yet who it is yet? Yes, of course, it’s Santa! So this story must be a true story mustn’t it.
The Snowman’s Ball began just as the first stars started to come out above the giant old oak tree that sits at the top of the small hill in the centre of the forest. Slowly at first, the snowmen began to arrive. Tall and thin, short and round, boy and girl, mummy and daddy. Some had dogs and some had cats, they all began to arrive. First one snowman, then two, they came in groups, and they came on their own. In no time at all there were twenty-five snowmen and still they came from all directions. Before you could say “strawberry and cream ice-cream,” there were a hundred snowmen, and still they kept on coming.
Some came with dustbins that they began to use as drums, and some had a traffic cone that they began to blow just like a trumpet. Others brought milk bottles and wooden spoons, and when they began to play it sounded just like a piano. Some used the sweeping brush from their arms as a guitar, and others brought a tin roof they could play. Soon the snowman band was playing a merry tune, to which all the snowman began to dance. The Snowman’s Ball was in full swing.
While the mummies and daddies danced and sang the evening away, the boys and girls played games. There was hopscotch, hide and seek, skittles, leap the reindeer and a super slide that most of the mummy and daddy snowmen had a go on too. The evening was passing, and as midnight approached all the snowmen began to gaze to the night sky, desperate to be the first one to see them. First one shout, then another and then a few more, before a great cheer went up. “He’s coming! He’s coming!” they all shouted excitedly.
Slowly they began to appear, getting nearer and nearer, larger and larger. Down they came to an almighty cheer! Santa and his reindeer landed at the bottom of the hill crying, “HO! HO! HO! And a merry Snowman’s Ball to one and all!”
